The online version now wants you to subscribe to view, no thanks not paying for rehashed stories from elsewhere plus adverts That being said Neil Metcalfe better than the preview Boro reporter.
PS last time it was delivered in North Hitchin pre lockdown .

Doesn’t get delivered anywhere anymore, but you can pick up a free copy after the checkouts at many supermarkets (at least in Stevenage).

The subscription is also advertised as reducing the number of adverts on each page.

Anybody is better than Layth. Genuinely anybody. I would rather read an article from Richie Wellens.

But Neil seems great, and genuinely wants to provide good Boro' content.

I like Neil a lot. His pieces are certainly not rehashed stories, they're first hand from the club usually. Can't speak for other parts of the paper as don't read it as no longer a local.

He explains the Comet's position in more detail in the link below and asks for feedback on what people would want to see/hear in respect of the Stevenage FC output:

I’m one of the news reporters, so can speak to that side of things.

We still do plenty of original reporting, though ‘rehashed’ press releases are - as they always have been - part of what we do. It simply wouldn’t be possible to cover all the important stories without using them.

We’d love to do even more original reporting, but with a very small newsroom these days (reflecting the picture across the country), it’s not possible to do as much as we used to.

One positive is that compared to many other local papers we, well, still exist, and we don’t rely on national stories that often dominate the websites of similar papers.

It’s also still completely free to read the print paper, which can be picked up at supermarkets and a few other locations too. Plus most articles on the website will remain free to read, until you’ve read a certain number in a given time period. If you’re reading enough that you hit the wall, then perhaps you may like to consider a subscription.

Finally, as Neil says, the adverts are a frustration for everyone - for you as readers but for us too. A subscription should help reduce the annoyance from them.

It is remarkable that the Comet has actual reporters and not a work experience kid aggregating AI-generated social media posts.
