Birmingham Promoted

Against all the odds, plucky Birmingham City have secured promotion to the Championship. What a fairytale story.
Let's hope Wrexham can also perform a similar miracle.

If I were a Birmingham fan, I’m not sure I’d be that excited.
They’re just heading back to the Championship, where they’ve spent most of the past decade anyway. With one of the biggest budgets in League One, promotion felt almost inevitable. If they were returning to the Premier League after 14 years, then I’d understand the real excitement.

They could certainly be contenders for a double promotion, albeit not favourites.
The FFP rules for League One have been far more favourable in comparison to being in the Championship, though this will change somewhat next season.

DVD out soon on how they achieved this great achievement against all the odds.

Warmed my heart to see them get success after fielding absolute unknowns like Tomoki Iwata, and Lyndon Dykes. Any claims the two of them resemble certain internationals are blatant lies.
Also who ever heard of this Stansfield kid? Plucked from obscurity for pennies...

Becareful, they turn into amatuer accountants when you mention the money they've spent on players.
Good riddence, the away day last month was horrid.

So I've discovered 🤣
They go awfully quiet when you talk about their £16m loss last season and their current debt of £72m though.
It staggers me how a club can go on a spree like that still with that much debt and those sorts of losses.
The EFL and particularly League One really need to review their financial rules.

Debt, if serviceable within the rules, is an essential part of business and not an issue.
Unserviceable debt/losses are the problem.

In that respect, I'm still grateful for the relatively tight ship that Wallace runs. Even then, he's put millions in over the years.

I'd take midtable seasons and financial security over the financial chasm that Birmingham are dangling over any day of the week.
If they don't make it to the PL in the next couple of seasons I genuinely could see them running into serious trouble with those debts.
It shocks me they'll spend like that in the same season you have clubs like Reading on the brink.

I’ve just finished reading an article on ‘how’ they did it. It’s wonderful story. Bought a tear to my eye.
