We are getting battered so far, probably should be 2 or 3 down

The worst thing about tonight for me was that Kemp didn't take the penalty.

Kemp has taken 1 penalty in the league this season and missed (Reid was not in the team). Reid had taken 1 penalty before tonight in the league this season and scored. Reid is clearly our penalty taker, poor effort tonight but I always find that it is better when everyone knows their place in the pecking order

But Kemp is on brilliant goalscoring form (the missed penalty was the very first match of the season and he has scored both penalties he has taken since then) whilst Reid is very much not.
You can know your place in the pecking order prior to the match, it doesn't need to be static all season.
There is the argument that Reid taking and scoring would do wonders for his confidence of course. Wonder how that confidence is doing tonight...

Fair point. I thought the same about Reid needing the penalty for his confidence when he scored against Stockport, and it did seem to work, very briefly.
I am aware of, but don't recall either of Kemp's successful penalties. I suspected that he would have a good technique so was disappointed when he missed against Shrewsbury.
Reid, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have the same conviction, particularly in his current form so fully understand where you are coming from

One red card in 214 matches for us.
Three in 32 matches for Burton. Lolz.

Felt sorry for him tbh. Totally lost his head in making that challenge. He was always so calm in a Boro shirt.
Would take him back next season if Burton go down.

Think both they and Crawley may escape though.

I had Cambridge as the likely escapees a couple of months back, but look at them now. And it really will be very, very funny if Peterborough go. Who’d’ve ever seen *that* coming?

I had pretty much made my mind up in October! He continues to show no signs of improvement in tactical flexibility, use of substitutions, rotation of the squad or motivation of his players. I have accepted the "style" of football that is being served up and that there will probably be no change of manager before the end of the season purely because the league position is the main focus this season, but it is a far cry from how we looked under Evans. Yes, our form was dropping off this time last year, but I was more confident in our ability to grind out results because of the manager and the way he set the team up

1-0 down and look way off the pace against a top side like Burton.
Could be 3 easily.
The only players with any credit from that first 45 are Freestone (for trying hard, albeit failing, to create something) and Kemp.
Everyone else needs a good half-time shoeing. Where's Gaz Murray when you need him?

Yes. When they repeatedly double up on our lb and rb, dragging them half way across the pitch with neither Reid nor Roberts anywhere near to help. Change it. Change is needed from time to time. You think Evans would have stood and watched as if he was a paying customer!

I'd make 4 subs at half time, starting with Reid and Roberts. Maybe LT for Phillips, White for King. Save one for Hanlan later.
Or change the formation as we are quite shit.

Lucky to only be 1 down. Numerous runners not being picked up. Basic stuff but we don't do it. Zero movement up front again. Reid may as well stay on the bench for what he offers. All round dreadful performance so far.

Tackle, break up play, intercept, quick turnovers, block, protect the back four, clear, short passes.
He won't do a sexy pass once a game that doesn't lead to anything but looks good, but he will do all the unnoticed work that actually makes a difference.

Protect the back 4 - Are you kidding me. I counted 3 occasions in the 1st half where he was busy ball watching as his player drifted into the box, leaving Pidge & Goode with a 3 v 2. He causes more problems than he solves!!

Re. Phillips, it's funny how I got shouted down when I suggested this 3 games into the season.
We also have some very tough games to come including Birmingham twice and Stockport away.

I’d have Phillips as one of the first names on the team sheet! He is exactly the sort of player we need & miss badly when he doesn’t play.
Having said that, I also think Freeman deserves more playing time. He has more creativity in him than others
