Judging from what I've just seen, they called it off and decided to play a practice game instead.
Anyone got any drying paint that needs watching?

I actually began to wish it had been called off! After about 6 minutes I said it had 0-0 written all over it. And again at 45. And again at about 89! No urgency at all, constantly looking to turn backwards, weak attacks when they eventually came.

It seems to me that the strategy is win at home and draw away.
Even if its ugly when we play this style away from home.
My view is that we get to the end of this transitional season and try and kick on next season.
With the players we have, next season will be much , much better...I hope anyway.

It does seem that way, I must confess.
Benefit of the doubt, this certainly has been transitional with the new manager and coaching staff.
We will see and can only hope for better football soon.

We have transitioned from a team that tried to score goals but found them hard to come by to a team that doesn't bother wasting the energy to try. Progress of a kind, I guess.

Surely one of the major benefits of appointing Revs was that he was part of the previous regime and therefore would not require such a transitional period? Or was that simply an assumption on my part?
I appreciate now that we are attempting to play a very different style of football under Revs than the more direct stuff that was so successful for Evans, but wasn't expecting it to be such a drastic change before the season started

We struggled to score when he Manager last time, so this should not be a surprise, as such there must be something he is instructing the players with his tactics, as it is too much of a coincidence that we are struggling again. We have much better players now than we had previously when he was Manager so there is no other explanation ? To put this in perspective last season we scored 57 goals in total, this season we are at the halfway point and only scored 18 ! Thankfully we have an excellent defensive record to bail us out..

Yes, neither stint has been particularly inspiring and it was pretty obvious from a few games in that we were setting up in the hope of winning 1-0 every week but that just isn't sustainable and is killing the atmosphere.
It is a great achievement to be keeping as many clean sheets as we are and generally keeping it tight at the back, and I am aware that our attendance figures continue to be encouraging. However, it just feels like we are regressing both on and off the pitch from the strong position we were in having been promoted back to L1.
This isn't just about not winning as much as we have gotten used to over the last couple of years. For me, there is a general feeling about the club/fanbase that people are losing interest which I find to be a little concerning and sad because we started to attract a younger demographic of supporters and get people of the town more engaged with what the club were about.

I doubt he does intend to set up for a 1-0 win, but the final outcome is often *not far* from that! As Jean Paul Sartre said “In football everything is complicated by the presence of the other team”, which is why all the amateur tacticians make me laugh. Let’s buy a winger in January and solve all our problems etc

Intention or not, it seems that 1-0 is the best possible outcome! Yes we have two 3-0 wins at home this season but I would argue they are the outliers. We are just so dependent on our defence and don't create the volume or quality of chances for me to confidently predict that we will score more than 1 goal in any given game.
And on top of this is the naivety of setting up the team in the same way game to game irrespective of the opponent, leading to results like Wycombe (yes, the goals came down to individual mistakes but they forced them by cleverly pressing the CBs and GK). From my observations, the style of the opponent has dictated our results more than our own tactics

There's definitely something in our results depending on how we match up the opposition style wise. For example this year we didn't really play any better at Blackpool than last year, but we didn't push our full backs up the pitch or keep giving their centre backs easy balls to mop up, so we didn't get battered.

I agree, and I am a bit of a dinosaur for mentioning this probably, but I recently read the Watford Observer guy’s book on Graham Taylor and Elton John. Tayor pretty much adopted the FA Technical Director’s mantra at the time (can’t remember his name, Charles something- rightly much maligned for the most part) of recognising that scoring more goals meant getting the ball in the last third as much as possible.
Being good at keeping the ball is vital, but it needs to be part of a bigger and better plan. I’d say keeping it well at the back is basic good defending. Use it when in control, ahead and take time out of the game.

Re: Match definitely on?

Absolutely, I have no problem with keeping the ball and we have seen in games when we are ahead that we are pretty good at it, but we have to take the lead for that to be effective and I'm not actually sure how often we have done that.
Everyone has a different view on how football should be played or what style they prefer to watch, but it is becoming a slog at the moment and as much as football is a results business, entertainment has a part to play as well. For a club of our size, I would imagine that attendances are vital to the financial side of things and people will only watch boring football for so long.

My fault, Jamie. We have a 100 per cent record of winning at Northampton when we are both at the game. Today I watched from home until I nodded off...
It might be sensible to sell all our strikers in the January window, as Revball doesn't require them. Interesting stat: by this stage last season Kemp, Young and Reid had scored over 40 league goals between them.
The current style (if you can call it that) of play will comfortably keep us up, but by the end of the season I'm not sure if I'll care any more.

Yes, I’d rather understood that Kemp and Young were brought in to score goals and that adding Reid’s tally to theirs would see us promoted by… well… Christmas.
And funnily enough I did look out for you today and remembered us meeting up in the pub last time. We should do that again sometime.

I concur, especially when White came on.
Never realised quite how bad Pidge's distribution was until today. He has two passes in his locker, 10 yards left or right, and a 60 yard flighted diagonal which works once in every six attempts at best.

Glad others are starting to see this issue. I'd advise anyone to closely watch him during our games.
Our gameplan is seemingly to play the ball back to him everytime, even when we are in the attacking third. Nearly everytime we do this the move breaks down. It's a massive factor in why we create so little. I'd love to see his pass completion stats.
We need to find a better, more effective way to play.

We did once White came on. We had much more of the ball from that point on. Reid just doesn’t do enough for me. We need more of a physical presence up front when away from home. Very surprised we didn’t see Simpson and Freeman in the 2nd half.

Players seemed satisfied at the end. No sign of Murphy waving final goodbyes. Phew.
Nothing really came off for us today. Northampton pressed us pretty well, but the basics of our forward play were poor - touch/control; selection and weight of pass. No shortage of effort, just a bit of a lack of quality when it mattered.
MoM: Nathan. He's had a brilliant spell.
I left with the thought that I really hope Dan B is back for Lincoln. Not a sleight against Lewis*, but he can't provide what Dan does. [*Loved his crunching tackle in the first half. Old-school!]

We missed Butler today, Lewis has done ok but hes a limited CB, not a FB.
Nathan has been excellent I agree - really hard on him if we drop him - but we have missed Sweeney's ability to pass 20 yards into midfield with a bit of purpose, and to carry the ball over the halfway line.

Two chances - sort of chances - Roberts shot , Reid when he had a run . They both came from long balls . I’ve never been one to criticise any manager . But the lack of ambition against a team struggling with that many injuries. I really don’t know the plan , but it whatever it is , it does not produce chances .

This was the way under Gary Smith - pass it around the back four until Akins would come into the right back position to get the ball and dribble it out of play or get it nicked off him before crossing the halfway line.

List made so many ignored runs, second half we at least tried to hit him a few times.
Reid was off the pace and Roberts spent more time trying to get fouled than trying to use the ball, he was outmuscled 2-3 times far too easily.
I went a bit potty mouthed at him truth be told.

List worked super-hard today. His movement was great; he created a lot of space that Freestone can't fill. On another day the ball would have broken in his favour. Good to see him locking down a place in the side.
