Attendances
Views: 1083
What’s the honest assessment on attendances? Surprised to see on 3,700 there today. Seems we’re slipping back down to the core 3000 home fans that we’ve relied on over the last few years but there’s a good 2000 floating that just aren’t engaged at the moment.
Is it a problem, or just a short term blip in attendance growth owing to some of the recent home performances?
Can’t help but think we budgeted for a higher attendance this season.

Strange to do a below average attendance during this period, my local step 5 club did 900+ yesterday. But I guess like Chuds says we were at home three days earlier and shit the bed in that match.

Dunno who your local club at Step 5 is, but if it is anything like the Spartan South Midlands Prem, yesterday was the only festive match they played (and Biggleswade Utd are now not playing at home again until mid-Feb).
I think it would have been much better had we been away on BD and today but home on NYD, considering all our recent home matches, but hey ho.
Also, if our board didn't budget for a reduction in crowds this season, taking into account all the SkySports+ stuff, they are idiots. But this is what clubs collectively voted for in voting in favour of the new TV deal, so they must lay in the beds they have made.

Playing ten of our last 12 matches at home, all since the end of October, is never going to get big crowds unless we are flying, people who pick and choose games simply aren't going to pay for them all, especially as the weather turns and in the build-up to Christmas.
Loads of them being on TV also doesn't help.
Results have been absolutely fine, but the entertainment has been somewhat hit and miss.
Playing what would be the biggest crowds all midweek (and on TV) also a factor. Cambridge, Northampton, Wrexham, Bolton all midweek, reducing the home and away crowds. Birmingham at home will also be midweek.
All factors, but the first one is key IMO. Not that I think we are doing bad, averaging over 4k for the season.

I think that we are at a plateau where the excitement of the promotion season and our first season back in L1 has now worn off. Evans was a big draw not only to our floating supporters but also away fans..(to abuse him) with the underwhelming appointment of Revs the excitement levels on and off the pitch have completely disappeared and I believe there is a sense of apathy about the club, our results have been mixed and the performances have been inconsistent to say the least as such attendances will naturally drop as floating supporters lose interest and this will only change when the football is consistently more entertaining and we are pushing for a play off place..

Add in that the ‘goof’ get bored of playing the firm and stop attending home and away. Happened last time we were in League 1 aswell.

It's not great for us financially, but this period of relative normality and seeing us show up regularly at former Premier League grounds to not disgrace ourselves is absolutely fine by me.

He is already actively trying to sell a percentage of his shares, despite getting more this year to inject another million or so Would not be surprised if he sells up completely in near future but does not seem to be the one to offload to the Hollywood FC types, but could be wrong I assume he would then become a Life President.

I would also add that we are still enjoying our second-highest EVER average attendance, only beaten by last season, which was always going to be higher for the novelty of being back in L1 for the first time in a decade and playing plenty of new clubs, with big away followings.
It could be better of course, with more entertaining football helping, but it really isn't at all bad, especially with all the other discussed factors coming into play and having a definite impact.

and I believe there is a sense of apathy about the club,
There’s little signs that are creeping in like that……even in the program you always used to get a page from the chairman or directors that always started by welcoming the players, fans and directors of the visiting club……the last time that happened was from Mike Pink for the home game against Northampton on the 3rd December. This might sound very trivial but little things like that grow into big things and give out the wrong messages about us to all fans.

For me personally if the performances were better and we were in games more I'd be more inclined to come. I don't mind a loss but sometimes you turn up and there's very little to watch from our perspective - sometime hoofball and chasing shadows.
Regardless of the result if your team is threatening and creating chances it's much more enjoyable. I would mainly say this and then the seasonality particularly over the last couple weeks.

I feel like the "core" is what we got when we were sh1t - no more than 2000 at best? The Evans years saw a steady uptick: besides the results he's a great salesman! Away support is often around 1/4 of our attendance, and Bristol didn't bring many. For me, the growth of attendances over the past three seasons has been fantastic - a real positive. It's mirrored by seeing ever more Boro kits around the town, particularly on kids. With the town growing at pace, there's potential to grow further. [Clearly the most important factor is results on the pitch!]

I saw him. Fair play.
Did you see the poor disabled bloke get his mobility scooter smashed by a wayward Reidy strike during the warm up?

The disabled guy in the scooter was moved to the raised disabled platform in the North West corner of the North, a bit more out of the way.
The ambulance people came as he had a real nasty looking bruise on his leg. It also damaged his scooter, snapping off a mirror. He had quite a few visits from Stevenage FC staff, hopefully offering to pay for the damage, these things aren't cheap.
He seemed OK but had to leave just after half time.

The nets are above the goal, the strike went wide, just over the adverts and slammed into the disabled section in the north east corner just as I walked in. Was worried it had hit someone as was a properly hard strike

Yeah I thought they did not seem upset ,very weird. In theory they could end up with a banning order, subject to the offence, for not just us but all clubs. That might wipe smile off their faces.

I’ve always wondered about banning orders. If you get one, don’t you just grow a beard, wear sunglasses and use a mate’s credit card to buy the ticket? Unless you are ‘famously’ banned so that all your former terrace mates grass you up, how would they know?

Where the club have a limited bunch of noisy fans like we do, the Police spotter and safety officer will have images of banned fans and will know most of them by name and which group they hang about with.
Id imagine our 'active' banned list is only 8-10 fans, so keeping an eye on CCTV and the two areas where the bulk of the youth tend to group together isnt hard.
As for growing a beard, most of the banned list are probably only 14-17 so you can forget that.

If they were vaping having been told not to, they'll probably be allowed back in once they've agreed not to vape in the ground again.
It's only a ground regulation breach not a law or Sports Ground Safety Authority mandate (yet, AFAIK)
