I’m liking the line-up. And 4 of our most likely goal prospects on together (Reid, List, Kemp, Young) is a good move… I hope. We can’t exactly say Revs isn’t doing all he can.

Reflecting on last night. I think most agree that it was a pretty insipid display against ten men until the last five minutes.
However, the fact that the players kept going until they scored is a positive sign that they're, by and large, behind Revell. It's up to Revs to harness this and get the attacking game firing now. This, coupled with the reasonable-ish league position, buys him more time for me.
But, sweet Jesus, we can't be watching that every week for much longer.

The reaction of Kemp to the bench after the goal celebrations also showed he is very much still on board.
As did the post-match stuff. Pidge was absolutely buzzing too, which pleased me greatly.

Although of course, Revell was missing from the bench at that point 🙂
I don't think there has ever been any question that he had lost the dressing room as it were. Indeed the opposite has been more of a criticism, that the players like him too much.
League position is now above expectations (but it is early days).
League points satisfactory, although without two late goals I would have been getting very worried. I always think as long as you have more points than games played you have a chance of staying up.
Entertainment, not great but I'm not fussed if we win often enough and don't look like fodder. So yesterday no issue with at all as we came away with the points.

I said after the weekend that I remained confident we would absolutely stay up even if he remained all season, and that our performance was enough for me to believe he should get given this week, to build on it.
The performance was not as good last night, although Northampton sitting back didn't help with that (we looked more dangerous and were opening them up more against 11 than 10), but we got the result we needed. So job done there.
What must now happen is that we kick on and don't revert to going to Crawley and playing for the 0-0. Results are the most important, then performances. You feel last night probably earned him some more leeway, probably until Christmas. So if he doesn't pick up more wins before then, those who never wanted him get a lovely Christmas present, if he does, people should be happy that their team is winning matches.

I really don’t agree. We were dominant for all 95 minutes. Not easy to break down 9 players camped in their own half on a small pitch. Evans couldn’t do it either.
People wanked themselves silly when we beat Wrexham, when the only difference was that we went 1-0 up early.

Re: Match thread

Yep, as soon as they went down to ten you could predict it was going to be an arduous task to break them down as it often is against 10.
It kind of ruined the game not just as a spectacle but also as a test case for those of us questioning Revell. Put him in a lose lose situation. If he wins it's "only because they had ten men" and if he loses it's "can't even beat 10 men".
So I'll defer my judgement to Saturday. Beat Crawley and I may have start eating humble pie. Lose and I'll be back to worrying that there isn't much sign of progression. Draw and it's as you were.

I agree with this - it's great getting the three points, and you couldn't argue with the players' work rate or desire. But up until the 85th minute it was fairly dreadful stuff against a team barely trying to get out of their own half. We didn't move the ball quickly or accurately enough to stretch them and in my mind we scored because they were absolutely shattered and/or lost concentration, rather than us doing anything particularly effectively. The mood on the ET didn't seem like a positive one until we scored.
Hopefully it's enough to break the scoring hoodoo but we'll need to play much better than that to progress and beat better sides.
On a positive note, Kemp was very good - again. He's really picked up since the start of the season

"in my mind we scored because they were absolutely shattered and/or lost concentration."
One could very much suggest both of those factors were a direct result of us dominating them for 90 minutes.
How many times do you see the top sides winning late on? Wrexham last night for instance, won 1-0 in the 93rd minute, probably after finally breaking through a staunch defence after dominating the game.

Re: Match thread

That's a fair point - and our dominance plus their lack of desire to attack probably contributed to them being worn out. I just felt it was more attritional rather than a result of us doing anything particularly well.
It will be interesting to see if we can carry the goalscoring into Saturday against a team you would assume would attack more than 10-man Northampton

Ok, here’s my updated thoughts.
I expected we’d do well tonight on that lineup, but they didn’t exactly set the world on fire. With the red card I thought we’d actually do something to win, but by the time we’d got to about 85 minutes it was clear to me that my earlier optimism had been misplaced - we can’t score against, much less beat, 10 men, at home with all four of our goal threats on the pitch. Boring, invention-less, headless football that from all the side-to-side football looked like Revs was playing for a 0-0 draw. At 88 mins I was in despair and was beginning to wonder who in this league we were ever actually going to win against.
The hilarious irony is that when we finally did get round to doing a couple of goals, it was while Revs wasn’t actually there to instruct the team! Tells you everything really. Doubly funny is the fact that I hadn’t even realised Revs had been sent off at HT until I saw it on facebook a few minutes ago!

Breaking down 10 men in a low block is never conducive to 'great football'. It enforces a sort of stalemate, until, like last night, you patiently break it. Then another goal soon follows. Resistance broken. In football terms this is evidenced in the first half, when Northampton were higher, and easier to get behind - see E.List burning up the supposedly rapid Guinness-Walker. That was direct, but effective, and it caused Northampton loads of problems.
Beyond that, it is obvious that people need to realign their lofty expectations, and see last night as progress.

On Guiness-Walker I certainly wouldn't want him as a left back but as a left wing back thought he could do a job had we kept him. But obviously we don't play that formation so surplus to requirements.
Was good to List has still got that bit of pace as a threat/option

Very true. It was always going to be hard after the red card.
But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try and play with tempo and a bit of guile, draw them on a bit and then move the ball very quickly, and break into spaces, so often I could see huge spaces, or.players in good spaces, in their half, aching to be exploited but we took another touch or safe pass and lost the momentum and they'd reset in their two defensive banks
I'm.all forpatience at the right time, and you can argue it won us the game, but a bit of flair would be nice. List and Kemp can both do flair.

Fairly sure we managed 3, albeit tame shots on goal. 2 saves, plus 1 blocked near the line.
Not that we were good, we were way too.predictable and methodical in our build up, and too easy to defend against.
We let them get back into their shape every time by paying 2-3 balls across the back before.pushing or pumping the ball forward.
Pidge did deliver 3-4 great long passes to Butler and Kemp though, they weren't all aimless hoofs. It was just that the backline was set and waiting for them.
List and Kemp the bright sparks.for me.first 50-60 minutes, then List got bored of not being spotted and stopped making the runs.
Reid was largely anonymous, one good snapshot from the edge of the box just wide, nothing else of note and little.movement til his goal.
White flattered to decieve for the most part.
Back line never troubled, Plenty of opportunities to get the FBs forward.
Our pressing was non existent for the most part without Roberts.
But, a win is a win. Let's hope it breeds a bit of confidence, enables us to get something Saturday at Crawley and build.

Against 10 men we expected a win. Up to 88 mins we were all despondent and frustrated. To be honest, for me, that feeling didn't subside even with the two goals. The win was expected but the poor performance for 88 mins lived longer in the memory.
Kemp was the highlight for me.

Pleased for Reidy and hopefully will spark some momentum and confidence

Correct.
Football is about results and entertainment.
Last night we got the result (which should be expected) and no entertainment. So I was mildly happy and very un-entertained.
The 2250 Boro fans in attendance (which will include ST no shows) should be enough of a marker for Phil, to show something is not right. This time last year we were all but selling out the stadium

This time last year every midweek game, plus plenty of Saturdays, wasn't on TV, we hadn't already had four home midweek league games (which are almost always much lower) by this stage of the season, and we hadn't had SEVEN consecutive (and eight of the last nine) games at home, in the lead-up to Christmas. It was also freezing.
Recent performances and results also had an impact of course, but let us not pretend there are not also plenty of other factors at play here - the attendances across this season are holding up well for us.

Seen more opportunities and actual crosses tonight which is pleasing but shame it's Young and List in those position rather than players who can cross ball to them in the middle.
List had a great opportunity to play it across early on and instead hit the side netting with a selfish shot.
Another occasion a great ball into the box which the defender almost put in his own net and if he hadn't got it Reid was there to tap in. That came from a forced long ball, but I'd like to see us choose to play that way.
Still trying to build up play from passing from defence through the middle and whilst it sometimes creates space for Kemp to make central runs it doesn't result in anything until the ball gets out wide, by which time the defence is set. A quick long ball out wide would give us that advantage of being able to put a cross in when not all their players are back.
Hey ho, that how Revs wants to play though so we just have to hope some players disobey.
At least against 10 men we might be able to score once.

There's no intensity in our play. Every game should be treated like a cup final.
And after so few points, having a home game against not a great team, who now only have 10 men, we should be absolutely going for it.
And yet it's just the same low level intensity, comfortable football like its a friendly or a training match.
One shot on target.
Someone needs to motivate these players and give them some instructions that excite them. They all look so bored of playing.

I was on the East but happen to agree with Sev. I feel like we allowed them to sit deep because there was no variety in the way we attacked. They didn't exactly pack the midfield or anything, just pushed Tyler Roberts higher and kept Pinnock and Hoskins wide. And they were happy to venture forward when we gave the ball away so there were chances to get the ball forward quicker. As others have stated we are just very predictable and slow in how we play/attack

Ah my mistake. Yes, very much so. I admit, we do not shoot enough for my liking and Nathan actually struck a nice effort from outside the area in the first half but that CANNOT be the answer.
We need to get the ball in the box more often and provide some service for our strikers.
We have shown that we can play some pretty good stuff at times but everything is very slow and our players show little to no football intelligence in games to actually do anything other than what they have presumably been instructed to do

I was on the East as well - really close to the fight between Piergianni & Eaves in the 1st minute - and I agree with you.
I actually thought they did alright against a very packed defence. All 19 outfield players were compacted into Northampton’s half for most of the 2nd half so it was incredibly difficult to break them down. There were lots of half chances & it paid off in the end.
It doesn’t help when the crowd are screaming ‘shoot’ every time anyone gets near goal then moans when each attack breaks down. They’re trying to play good football.

Could be. It felt like no atmosphere, no intensity, no tempo until the last 2 minutes of normal time.
List was the only bright spark in the first half. Nothing happened in the second half against a set defence, apart from at the end where we upped the tempo a bit and caught a tired and sluggish Northampton off guard.
Perhaps that was always the master plan.

Last season I really rated him and wanted him to play more, as well as feeling sorry for him that he ws so often played to cover somebody else (at RB for instance), whereas this season he has been one of my biggest disappointments.

I think that's unfair, he's had some really good games this season - against Wrexham in particular. He looked leggy last night though and as someone pointed out, gave away the ball in some quite dangerous positions.
I think most got on his back last night because of the inconsistent set pieces and because he was guilty of passing it between Thompson and Piergianni without trying to be more incisive repeatedly. King did well when he came on but I'm not sure a midfield without White offers much control on the ball

I too thought he was an ambitious and really exciting signing who would come into his own this season with JFC sidelined. But overall he has been a huge disappointment. You feel there is a really footballer in there, but he forever takes the safe option. Time to give him a rest.
I also wonder if we have a rule where once you've scored from a free kick you aren't allowed to take them any more.
Young hit a wonder goal to win the game at Mansfield; White now takes every dead ball to very, very little effect.

The pace of Reid & List is looking threatening but we’re hitting so many long hopeful balls that keep drifting off it’s ridiculous!
Nathan Thompson is class but, him apart, it’s been really poor again

We're really boring to watch. I don't know why we're not creating anything against 10 men

There was me hoping he'd just decided to pack his bags at half time after another hopeless display.

Was it Northampton who were a bunch of pricks when they beat us the other year, when Evans was in charge.
They seem pretty dirty and nobbish.

You'd hope now Northampton are down to 10 Revs will go with 2 up top and try and win the game. But maybe i'm just being innocent and naieve in not understanding the benefits of 4231 being the answer to every question this season.
