Was anybody on Borochat at today’s match? Be interesting to hear your views on the performance especially the new players. Thought that was one of the main purposes of this forum!😀

For my sins I was there.

We scored from a very good corner we have absolute threat from set pieces im half tempted to see what the odds are on a defender being our top scorer this season . A, because of how good set pieces will be and B, we didn’t seem to have a genuine in play attacking goal threat today .

We played very much in the big strong physical mode. Defense looks strong . Goalkeeper was excellent . Midfield was ok though not overly creative .

Our way to attack seemed to be to turn them rather than play through them . Our keeper had to save more than theirs . We pressed well for the first 15 I hope we do more of that once fitter .

I went and would agree with you.

Keeper looked solid but no outstanding performances from the outfield players, and very little quality on the ball.

Our attacking and build up play was non existent.

Difficult to read much into pre season but I feel less confident going into this season on the back of the 2 games I’ve seen than I have in previous pre seasons.

I can't really comment yet with any confidence as I've only seen us at Jersey, which seemed OK but against much lower opposition with a few youth team players playing too.

From what I've read and heard it sounds worryingly like the last time Revs was in charge. But I am cautious of drawing conclusions from friendly matches.

I think we have a reasonable squad who should be good enough to stay up and that's the extent of my ambitions this season.

Hopefully once the proper stuff starts and when it matters, will we step it up and have that drive and mentality to find ways to win games.

I'm hoping the ex-Arsenal first team coach will ensure some technical quality in amongst what I fear may be a very direct style of play where everything is about pressing tempo and energy, which didn't work for Revs last time.

I like to see us press high, but you cannot do it for 95 minutes. Players will tire, and when they tire they tend to simply "get rid" and give away possession.

Hope ro be pleasantly surprised.

At Braintree on Friday night Revs was fuming at Sweeny for playing it out from the back. He even used the good old phrase of 'just put it in the fucking stand'

Agree with Revs on that one.

Clear the danger. League One defenders are generally not equipped with the facilities to play themselves out of trouble and will end up gifting chances more often than not. Clearing a ball from danger is a good thing.

Hoofing into the stands when not in danger or under pressure etc is not the same, that would be stupid.

Not really too dissimilar to how we've played the past 2 seasons.

On occasions Sweens shows his inner-John Stones. That just shows he's confident, which is a positive!

With the number of subs you can make nowadays I would suggest that a pressing style can be sustained.

You worry we'll try and play it out from the back and do tikka takka keep ball?

If we do it'll.last about 5 minutes before Pidge says "fuck this, get it out of my half of the pitch"

As for Chuds view that a pressing style can be maintained for 90 minutes through clever use of subs I disagree viz;

An effective press requires a high level of coordination across the front 5/6. Rotation and replacement of members of that group reduces the levels of understanding and coordination, which makes the press harder to maintain.

And a press.is only effective if you do something with the turned over ball. We dont do that bit very well, and will do it less well with second choice players (subs) coming into play.

All that being said, pressing in phases and short spells and being aggressive *is* what we do best, so we have to hope it works.

Better get my spectacles, typos galore.

United, but yeah.

Two red cards (should have been two more), plus another for one of the coaching team who ran on the pitch at Liam Smyth (our former youth player), all from separate incidents, and half the remaining players booked because the ref lost control of the game after about 20 mins with two ludicrously soft bookings that meant he ended up booking most fouls the rest of the game. United equalised to make it 2-2 and take it to a replay with a 99th min penalty, taken against an outfield player in goal after the keeper got sent off for the foul (having already been booked for time wasting), and all of this after a 45 minute delay to the second half because one of the linos left at HT and there was no replacement so they had to drag one in from elsewhere. And all played out in glorious sunshine with the ability to have a few beers pitchside and with a belting atmosphere. A bargain afternoon's entertainment for just £7.

Has got me right up for our real stuff to start now too. Will be there for Shrewsbury, Norwich and Huddersfield. Hurrah!

Nah, a few people do both (such as me) but mostly very different sets of people go to each. See other Boro' fans at both too. FC used to have some Town fans watch them as they formed as an off-shoot of Town's youth team, but dunno if that is still the case since the move as not watched them.

I will be able to do a few double-headers this season with us playing at 12:30 and one of them at 3, which is good. Did that on the final day last season, watching us beat Cheltenham and then dashing off to see Town win the league. That was a fun afternoon.

From what I have heard/read, our match today was a total snoozefest (the serious lack of any match updates from our Twitter feed would back this up), but the keeper apparently looked good and made one stunning save, and Freestone would have been sent off in a normal match.

Beyond that, I can offer nothing.

Standout against Chelsea? The only thing he stood out for was getting continuously beaten by their (admittedly) very good number 10 and resorting to kicking him until he went off.

The concern being that seemingly all those who have watched him have been in agreement that he is not a left back and looks totally out of position there, and I don't see how he and Pidge both fit into a CB pairing. A back three/five could work, but Revs clearly favours a back four.

I liked Guinness-Walker as a left wing back as competition for Butler. Thought he was one of the most exciting players we had during our poor period, always looking to run at the opposition.

But if playing a back 4 then I wouldn't have him as LB and probably not as LM either. So if not playing with wing backs then surplus to requirement. Wages may also have been an issue.

Personally I'd have signed him and played a back 5 this season.

He showed glimpses of promise but no end product in terms of goals or assists. Released by Reading and still without a club. Collectively the Jan loan signings had a negative impact rather than a positive one. Time to move on.

How did they January signings have a negative impact? On the whole they weren’t great but they were necessary reinforcements. Unfortunately they weren’t up to the standard of the existing team members but it wasn’t their fault the wheels fell off. We just ran out of steam.

Guinness-Walker had promise and showed glimpses of that. No point tarring him with the same brush as all the other loan signings otherwise we should already write off Freestone because he got relegated last season and Pidge should never have walked in the door because Oldham were relegated when he was there.

I don't follow your logic. Freestone is (for us) an expensive buy and Piergianni was a huge and very welcome signing.
Neither had anything to do with loans.
The three loanees who came in January contributed very little and, in case of Oliver, had a negative impact in terms of performances and, in my opinion, results.
