Club legends suggestions
Views: 1636
So with my admitted overreaction in calling TVC a "club legend" the other day (Sev and Chuds, you had it right), and the tongue-in-cheek thread about bringing back club 'legend', Ben Kennedy (wouldn't even put him in the same bracket as TVC) it got me thinking.
What do people think constitutes a club legend, and who would ours be?
We're still a young club, but we're hitting 50 in a few years and have quite the storied history now. There will be legends quite a few of us weren't even alive to see or were too young to have seen (sorry to call out the veterans on here).
Here's the appearances link (I appreciate there are more measures of a legend though) that PeteH shared the other day -;
https://www.boroguide.co.uk/records/players/
So yeah any contenders and why? (Extra marks for anything further back).
I'd start with the rather obvious one, Ronnie Henry. Most appearances in our history. Solid at the back, and captain at points. Wore the shirt with pride and spent a total of about 13 years at the club.
I've been a fan of the club since the tail-end of the 04/05 season, watching him line-up in that playoff final alongside players like Alan Julian, Goodliffe, Dino, and Anthony Elding. I was 13 years old.
I feel devastated I never saw his last game but when he finally stopped playing for us in 2019 I was 27 years old. At the time, from his first appearance to his last, was over half my lifetime.
Even now when someone asks me to name a Boro player he's still the first to come to mind 5 years on.

My 'Legends XI'...
Gallagher
Henry
Roberts
M Smith
Laird
Venables
G Cox
Bostwick
Boyd
Gittings
Hayles
It makes me shudder to think about the players I've left out there â though probably would only be able to name another XI.

Thatâs right up there Pete I have two thoughts : at LB I think Paul Peterson may be a more important shout at LB than lairdy given the club impact he had I also canât have Venables ahead of Danny Dance who simply for the level at the time pound for pound is our greatest ever player.

I certainly won't begrudge Danny Dance's name being mentioned in the context of legends. But was well gone by the time I started supporting Stevenage so cannot comment...

Used to sed Dance playing on Sunday mornings for Bowaters after playing for us the afternoon before .Think we had a few at time who did the same for local factor/)pub teams etc.

Yeah - from what I've read, I understand Derek Montgomery had an issue with several players turning out for Boro' and a Sunday League team. And some ended up leaving Boro' - Dance, Daintree... older fans may know?
Think some were also part of the Twin Foxes team that did quite well on a national level.

Laird is a great shout tbh.
A legends XI from players I've seen play would be...
GK - Day
RB - Henry
CB - Robbo
CB - Goodliffe
LB - Darius
RM - Lawrie Wilson
CM - Bostwick
CM - Byrom
LM - Boyd
ST - Morison
ST - Reid
I realise that's probably a bit of a nostalgia XI and I almost started dropping in names like Nurse, Bulman, Dobson, and Cole (RIP).
So yeah arguably not the best 'legends XI'

Did you see them all play, or partly going on stats?
I could (just) make a 5-aside team of those I saw play from your XI, and would have to play rush goalie!

No.
Just too late for Gitts and way too young for Graham Cox.

I think a measurement is the impact they have on a club.
Longevity helps that as does winning things. Being a star player, better than the players around you also makes you stand out.
It's always going to be subjective too.
Ronnie Henry, Mark Smith, Barry Hayles, Martin Gittings, Mark Roberts all spring to mind. George Boyd was legendary but did he play enough games to be a legend?
There's a lot of players in both conference winning teams that could be considered - Chris Day, Des Gallagher, Ede Sodje, Bostwick, Laird....
Morison, Alford for their goals?
Some like Elding are more Cult Heroes than legends.

As a side note, do you remember Efe chasing that bloke around after he'd taken the do-rag off his nut? Excellent entertainment, even without the Benny Hill music.

Now you mention it, I think you're right. Efe was a great player and should sail effortlessly onto our all time greats list. The captain back then was a guy called Berry, he was excellent too. I think he came back for a season after he'd left but wasn't as good.

Boyd definitely. Without a doubt the greatest player Iâve ever seen play for us.
He would just walk around defences like they werenât there in his last season here.

I think we could just pool all the Sodjes together as a legendary family đ
Day definitely in with a shout if we're going by position. Have we ever had a better keeper?

As Chuds says, Taye is a better keeper, doesn't mean Chris Day isn't a club legend though

Chris Day is a club legend IMO. Here for a decade, 350 appearances, won things, was outstanding.
But Taye is a better keeper, and the best I have ever seen for us. I know a lot of people laugh when I saw this, but I absolutely believe it to be true. And that should take nothing away from Daisy, who was brilliant, and pulled out some amazing saves.

Taye isnât better than Day. Yet. If he doesnât go on to be however Iâll be very shocked.
Agree that Daisy is absolutely a club legend.

Never saw Gittings play but always heard of him as a club legend.
Just how good was he compared to other forwards we've had? What was his style play?

He scored 217 goals in 400* appearances (54% hit rate). He scored in the UCL, all levels of the Isthmian and the Conference. I think, on this occasion, the stats speak for themselves.
