Apperre and Simpson are significant upgrades on Hemmings and Oliver
Phillips in the CDM role is probably an upgrade on Burns.
Kemp I imagine will play a fairly varied role behind the striker, and is a big upgrade from Macca.
We look good and I dont think there is much more we need. UTB

Do we need another striker on loan or just hope Reid is back early Sept .In meantime we could use Roberts as. 4th striker ?

It's usually 2 weeks into the season we lose loads of players through injury

Already knew/suspected this didn't we?
Edit: And Butler is suspended for the opening match too.

Take will be back in "a few weeks" from a presumably broken finger.
So that's worryingly tight too, definitely no room for a setback, depending on how you define 'a few weeks' (3 weeks-ish?)

I thought they'd all be back playing by the end of September (if not sooner)?
It's not the ideal start but even if they don't play a minute of league football until October it's 8 league games from a 46-game season.
Not great but by no means a disaster and it's the start of the season so fatigue won't be an issue if we need certain players to make more back-to-back starts over that period.

I think the start is important though. Given Revs last stint in charge, he needs to get off the ground running before the pressure mounts

Can Apere and Simpson score goals? That’s the big question. All looks great on paper but the proof will be in the pudding. My biggest fear for this squad is where the goals will come from.

They were both playing for Northampton last season. Wonder if they played together or if it was one or the other. I do wonder how many appearances were starts and how many from the bench as that can distort a player's goals per game stats.

21 starts and 23 sub appearances for Simpson at Northampton. Six goals scored.
28 starts and two sub for Swindon. 11 goals scored.

Re: Squad

I think that's pretty good record then.
Because coming on for 15 minutes at the end of a games isn't ideal for a striker. You're either going to be behind trying to score against a side who has shut up shop. Or your own team is trying to hold on to what they have, so aren't being adventurous.
Basically a record of 1 goal for every 3 games started.

They started just two matches together, both in the FLT.
They lost both, but Simpson scored a penalty in both.

Some left back cover and another attack minded player (preferably someone who can play out wide) would be nice but we’re in a pretty solid place.
A back up keeper maybe but I think we might go with Mitchell on the bench and utilise the emergency loan market if something happens to Taye.
Things may go quiet now until the end of the window when we might dip into the loan market for a couple of reinforcements if the right deals come along.

Really? Two strikers that work hard but don't score goals. All hopes are on Ried for goals.
Burns was great, I'm not saying Phillips is worse, I haven't seen him play yet, but I'd be surprised if he's better than Burns was.
I think goals are going to be an issue this year

I think we’ll see a few more goals from Roberts this year. From the friendlies so far he’s 100% been the orchestrator of our best chances up top.
We’re undoubtedly a team that will look to the team to spread goals around, which I think is the right thing to do. We were expected to lose against Cov & Watford but 3 goals from open play against championship opposition isn’t bad. Despite the second half against Cov, we definitely looked the better team and 3-1 at half time didn’t reflect our quality of play.

I thought he was by a country mile our most overrated player and didn't see what he offered us. He didn't score, he didn't assist, he couldn't pass or beat a man, he let his man run past him or gave away a foul more often than he won possession back. I was of the opinion we played him to avoid having to pay his wages.
Some people really rate(d) him, but I never saw it.

He wasn't awful but I wouldn't have signed him on a free if they released him.

He made one appearance for them in the League Cup before joining us. That's competitive.
I didn't think he was phenomenal but also didn't think he was bad. Comfortable on the ball, often tidied up in front of the defence and released. I don't think our style of play suited him and he probably needed to adapt better to League One type of football, but he did alright for me.

Yeah, quite possibly for that game as cover, but long-term it will be Butler so Freestone can play in his conventional CB.
Kane has played LB in two of the three watchable PSFs so far, so would imagine he is more likely than Luther if either of them plays there as cover.
