Personally I think we have to "put up" with mid table finishes for 3 or 4 seasons at a time. (I'm actually grateful for them rather than being in a relegation scrap).

Then every 4 or 5 years give it a go by spending a bit beyond our means, see how it goes, then back to mediocre for a few seasons to recover.

If we get a windfall from a transfer etc then reinvest that and go for it, or if a particularly season the League looks weaker in terms of sides then go for it.
